Assessment Methodology of NAS Exam 2024
To keep the process fair, random sampling will be used to select which schools and students will participate. Each grade level will have its own set of questions designed to test different skills:
Class 3 - Students will answer 45 multiple-choice questions in Language, Maths, and environmental science, with 90 minutes to complete the test.
NAS 2024 is Competency-Based Assessment
NAS uses a competency-based assessment model. This means the survey not only looks at what students know but also how well they can apply their knowledge in real-world situations. The survey will also examine factors like the learning environment and socio-economic conditions that may influence students’ performance. The results will be broken down into district-level report cards to provide detailed insights.
About National Educational Achievement Survey 2024
National Educational Achievement Survey (NAS) began in 2001 and is conducted by the NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training). It happens every 3 years and assesses student performance in subjects like math, science, and language. NES not only looks at academic results but also considers social and economic factors that affect learning. The data collected helps shape education policies and improve teaching methods. NES includes students from both urban and rural areas, making it one of the largest surveys of its kind in India.
National Educational Achievement Survey (NAS) 2024, which is a large-scale assessment to obtain information about the learning achievements of school students will be taken up on 4 December 2024.
Survey will cover nearly 5 million students across 792 districts belonging to Classes 3, 6 and 9 this year. In the 2021 survey, students of Classes 3, 5, 8 and 10 were covered.
The official further said that the plan to administer the survey to students of Classes 3, 6 and 9 students is aligned with the new National Curriculum Framework (NCF).
“Class 3 marks the end of the foundation stage (which is till Class 2), Class 6 is the culmination of preparatory stage (which is till Class 5), and Class 9 marks the end of middle stage (which is till Class 8),” the official explained.
The survey conducts random sampling to select schools and students to prevent bias. Students of Class 3 are expected to answer 45 multiple choice questions designed until the Class 2 level, with weightage of 15 marks each for Language, Maths and environmental science, in 90 minutes.
“For instance, Class 3 students are expected to read small texts with comprehension, read and write numbers up to 999, solve for addition and subtraction of three-digit numbers, carry out simple division and multiplication tasks, read time correctly using a clock and so on. Based on analysing the answer sheets, we calculate district average performance, State and national average performance in NAS,” the official said.

National Educational Achievement Survey to be held in 2024 (NAS-2024) will be conducted through PARAKH. This year's National Educational Achievement Survey will be known as PARAKH.
